A CUSD Community Message

Posted Date: 05/19/26 (12:45 PM)

Dear CUSD Families,

We are deeply saddened by the shooting tragedy at the Islamic Center of San Diego yesterday. Our hearts are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence against the Muslim community, and we stand united against hate and violence in any form.

Seeing news of any shooting in the community, especially shootings that occur at places of worship or in our schools, brings a sense of fear for our own loved ones. Please know that as parents and educators, providing a safe environment for our students is of the utmost importance for all of us in the Carlsbad Unified School District.

Our school staff regularly review site safety plans and have a strong, ongoing relationship with the Carlsbad Police Department to ensure we do everything we can to maintain the safety and security of our schools. We also prioritize mental and emotional safety and embrace the different cultures and backgrounds that make up our school community.

With the ongoing media coverage of yesterday’s incident, our students may be navigating their own fears and worries. As adults, it’s important to provide a safe space for our students to share their thoughts and get support to process their feelings and trauma in a safe way. The San Diego County Office of Education offers a list of resources to help families navigate these conversations, including tips for helping children cope with hate crimes and managing feelings following shootings. In CUSD, school counselors are available at school sites should students need to talk to someone. We also share this information with our school staff, ensuring all adults on our campuses can provide developmentally appropriate information and support.

At the Carlsbad Unified School District, we are invested in the well-being of each member of the community, and ensuring our students, families, and staff feel safe and supported especially during tragedies like the one that occurred yesterday. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Andrea Norman

Superintendent
