Title I School-Level Parental Involvement Policy

Carlsbad Village Academy

Carlsbad Village Academy has developed a written Title I parental involvement policy with input from Title I parents. This was achieved through parent feedback during parent conferences.  It has distributed the policy to parents of Title I students via letters, email, and posting the policy on the school website.  The policy describes the means for carrying out the following Title I parental involvement requirements [20 USC 6318 Section 1118(a)-(f) inclusive].

Involvement of Parents in the Title I Program

To involve parents in the Title I program at Carlsbad Village Academy, the following practices have been established:

• The school convenes an annual meeting to inform parents of Title I students about Title I requirements and about the right of parents to be involved in the Title I program.
  • The school holds School Site Council meetings to discuss these topics.
• The school offers a flexible number of meetings for Title I parents, such as meetings in the morning or evening.
  • Parents are asked to determine convenient times to attend meetings and based on their feedback meetings are set to accommodate the majority of parents.
• The school involves parents of Title I students in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of the school’s Title I programs and the Title I parental involvement policy.
  • During School Site Council meetings parents review the ongoing improvements and the parent involvement policy.
  • These meetings are scheduled at least one time per semester. 
• The school provides parents of Title I students with timely information about Title I programs.
  • This is achieved through parent conferences with the principal.
• The school provides parents of Title I students with an explanation of the curriculum used at the school, the assessments used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet.
  • Parents receive information about curriculum and assessment during the Back-to-School Night and through intake meetings for new students.

• If requested by parents of Title I students, the school provides opportunities for regular meetings that allow the parents to participate in decisions relating to the education of their children.
  • Parents are encouraged to attend School Site Council Meetings that are held each semester.
  • Parents may also meet with the principal at any time to discuss the program.  

School-Parent Compact

Carlsbad Village Academy distributes to parents of Title I students a school-parent compact. The compact, which has been jointly developed with parents, outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement. It describes specific ways the school and families will partner to help children achieve the State’s high academic standards. It addresses the following legally required items, as well as other items suggested by parents of Title I students.

• The school’s responsibility to provide high-quality curriculum and instruction
• The ways parents will be responsible for supporting their children’s learning
• The importance of ongoing communication between parents and teachers through, at a minimum, annual parent-teacher conferences; frequent reports on student progress; access to staff; opportunities for parents to volunteer and participate in their child’s class; and opportunities to observe classroom activities

The school developed this policy through input from parents, students and staff.  This compact is affirmed during each student’s  intake process to the school. 

Building Capacity for Involvement

Carlsbad Village Academy engages Title I parents in meaningful interactions with the school. It supports a partnership among staff, parents, and the community to improve student academic achievement. To help reach these goals, the school has established the following practices.

• The school provides Title I parents with assistance in understanding the State’s academic content standards, assessments, and how to monitor and improve the achievement of their children. 
• Parents receive written explanations in their home language and meetings are held to discuss these topics.
• The school provides Title I parents with materials and training to help them work with their children to improve their children's achievement. 
• Parents receive assistance in accessing their student’s grades and assignments through Schoolloop.
• With the assistance of Title I parents, the school educates staff members about the value of parent contributions, and in how to work with parents as equal partners. 
• Throughout the year staff meetings are dedicated to involving parents. 
• The school coordinates and integrates the Title I parental involvement program with other programs, and conducts other activities, such as parent resource centers, to encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children. 
  • Parents are required to meet with the principal before a student enters the school
  • The counselor meets with parents at least twice a year to discuss student progress and to review and encourage parent involvement with the student. 

• The school distributes Information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities to Title I parents in a format and language that the parents understand. 
  • Parents receive letters in their home language
  • Information is posted on the school website
  • This policy is posted in a prominent place in the  main office.

• The school provides support for parental involvement activities requested by Title I parents.
  • Parents provide meeting times for parents when requested
  • The school will communicate the activities on the school website and send out reminders via email and school messenger.

Accessibility

Carlsbad Village Academy provides opportunities for the participation of all Title I parents, including parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory students. Information and school reports are provided in a format and language that parents understand.

All information concerning meetings and opportunities for parent participation are communicated via letters home, email, and information posted on the school website.

Parents are invited to attend our Title 1 Parent Meetings. Dates and Times to be announced. We will discuss our school needs and offer suggestions to our School Site Council. Additionally our School Site Council meets once a year to decide Title 1 implementation. If you are interested in volunteering for either (Parent Representative or School Site Council). SCHOOL-PARENT COMPACT

Learning is most successful when students, parent/guardians and the school work together. This compact outlines the roles of each of these groups. This compact was jointly updated and agreed upon by parent/guardians and distributed to all parent/guardians of students at our school since we are the recipient of Title I funds. 

AS A STUDENT

I agree to:

• Be on time to all my classes
• Complete all assignments and exams
• Return completed homework on time
• Be attentive in class
• Ask for help when needed
• Be responsible for my behavior
• Be respectful of others
• Dress in an appropriate manner
• Keep my parent/guardians informed of my progress in my classes

AS A SCHOOL

We agree as an entire staff to:

• Communicate with parent/guardians in a timely manner
• Constantly work to improve teaching strategies
• Maintain high quality curricula and instruction based on the appropriate course content as stated in the Common Core Standards as they are implemented
• Be positive role models for our students
• Be sensitive to the individual needs of all students
• Show respect for each student
• Be available to help students resolve academic, classroom and peer problems
• Praise the student for his/her success
• Correct and return appropriate work in a timely manner
• Communicate school and class expectations in person at Back to School Night
• Issue appropriate reports to parents on student progress in a timely fashion
• Make volunteer options available to parent/guardians to help with school needs     through mailings and Parent/guardian Center functions
• Make opportunities available for parent/guardians to participate in their student’s educational program through meetings with the counselors, school staff, and specially called meetings about colleges, test score releases, or other pertinent school programs
• Make options available for parent/guardians to make appointments to observe the educational program of their student throughout the school day

• Talk to my son/daughter daily about his/her academic progress
• Encourage my son/daughter to complete his/her homework; check homework assignments
• Provide an appropriate setting for my son/daughter to do homework
• Monitor my son/daughter's academic progress
• Attend Back to School Night, Open House, and other school events
• Praise my son/daughter when he/she succeeds in a task
• Review all school communications and communicate to school staff any concerns through phone calls/messages, emails, or in-person visits
• Support all school policies (i.e. dress code, tardy/attendance, cell phone, and academic honesty policy)
• Encourage my son/daughter to engage in independent reading activities
• Ensure my son/daughter arrives at school early enough to be on time to his/her first class
• Become involved in the educational program of my son/daughter and participate actively in school parent/guardian activities
